Over the last few years I’ve been working with students from all over the world to help them to understand how to fault find, troubleshoot and repair refrigeration systems within the Marine and Oil & Gas Industry. A lot of this was based on the FGas course because this is the mandatory qualification to legally work with refrigerants and was the minimum that companies had to have to comply with the regulations. Using my experience in the Marine & Offshore industry, I was delivering our Marine Refrigeration course that included the C&G FGas qualification. This was well received by all of my students but based on their feedback, they still wanted more. So I had to think outside the box. What was it that they really wanted and needed?
Its troubleshooting! They need to be able to correctly diagnose a fault and fix it immediately. That’s what really matters. Yes they need to understand the repair process and they MUST comply with the regulations but it’s the stress of not understanding how to diagnose a fault that impacts them the most.
So I set to work creating a new course called the ‘Refrigeration Masterclass’. I called it this because I wanted to cover everything from basic principles right through to the latest techniques in troubleshooting. It needed to be really valuable! and not just an FGas course! The Refrigeration Masterclass is a 6 week online course that includes a range of study materials such as elessons, videos, study guides, scenarios and quizzes to test your knowledge throughout the module. Each week a new topic is released and we get together on a Q&A call to improve the method of teaching and I can answer any questions that you might have related to the topic that you are learning. We also have a technical discussion forum which you remain a member of after completion of the course. There is also the option to include the FGas qualification which is completed here at our training school in the UK.
Why deliver this training online?
Quite simply because it makes it more flexible for everyone. I can update the course material very easily and if I want to add more value its a very simple process. But perhaps more importantly is that I can offer a training solution that can be done at your own pace.
Here are some of the reasons why online training works:
- Its totally flexible so you can learn when its convenient to you
- Learn when you are at work or on rotation
- No time away from family & friends
- Includes virtual tutorials
- Short time frame
- Goes beyond the FGas syllabus and teaches service, maint. & troubleshooting techniques
- Includes ongoing support in technical forum
- Includes the C&G FGas qualification (Optional)
Well, my first set of students have just completed the course and I recently receive this testimonial from one of them. I hope you don’t mind me sharing it as I think it gets across the message that I am trying to achieve.

Re: Refrigeration Masterclass – Tradewinds Engineering
The Refrigeration Masterclass was exactly what I needed. As a marine engineer on a superyacht based in Fort Lauderdale, I was looking for a distance learning program that would fit into my work schedule. Stuart assisted me in this a great deal, and was always available to answer any questions I had and set aside 2 hours every Sunday for a Q&A.
Whilst I already had a basic understanding of how refrigeration systems work, this course takes it to a whole new level. We’ve covered everything from the basic principles right through to maintenance procedures and troubleshooting techniques and I am now a lot more confident to fix these systems when we are at sea.
Thankyou Stuart for the excellent tuition. I highly recommend this course to all marine engineers who need to understand refrigeration systems and also gain the FGas qualification.
Regards, Mark Edmiston, Chief Engineer, MY Grey Matters
From Stuart: Thankyou Mark. Its been a real pleasure working with you. Stay in touch and know that you still have my full support either by phone or in the forum.
So I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to this course. If you are interested in learning more about refrigeration systems, then please contact me at [email protected] or Direct Message me. I will give you a call back and we can see if the course is right for you. We also have a range of other online HVAC training courses at www.technicalpassport.com
